Their Story

Hello I am Sheila! My favorite song is On The Wings of Love by Jeffrey...

Osborne because it reminds me of my marriage. What makes me happiest is riding a train and taking gifts to my grandchildren. I first became homeless in 2004 when my husband died. My husband and I always planned on traveling around the US in Greyhounds. I decided to honor him by buying a Greyhound ticket and taking off. I slept on Greyhound buses for about 6 months with my husband's ashes. My husband always wanted to come to Seattle so I decided to come here to put his ashes to rest. My life changed further when I discovered that my daughter had viscously murdered my granddaughter. I was shocked and I couldn't believe it. I struggled with my mental health. Then, I started staying at shelters in Seattle. I got connected with DESC (Downtown Emergency Services Center). After three years, I found housing. I was hired at Amazon and was working full-time. I found a great therapist who helped me process my family trauma. Unfortunately, I ended up having a stroke which set me back in my progress. I had to stay in a hospital for eight months. I had to quit my job due to my health. Luckily, I was able to qualify for SSA which helps me pay my bills but money is still tight. I have had a lot of hardship but I still have a lot of hope. I found community at Mary's Place and I treasure the friendships I have here. I hope that I can heal my connection with my sisters one day. I appreciate any help you can give me. I am not asking for a hand-out, I'm just asking for a helping hand. My goals for 2023 would be my health and my feet take better care of myself and where good shoes on My feet. Keep my mental health up, eat good healthy foods, pay rent and electric bills on time no late fees!! I love to sew no sewing machine used to have one and I enjoy reading biographies Michelle Obama, Reba McEntire books and fishing for perch catfish thank you for asking and thank you most of all for being there!

These are our neighbors

During this unprecented time, it's never been more important to help them find a safe, stable, supportive place to sleep at night.

We find that when we wrap a social home around someone, they gain the capacity to often find the physical home soon after.

You are invited to join one or many who seek to find a home this year.

The number one question I'm asked, is " Jeff, how do I respond when asked for help on the street? Samaritan is an answer to that question.

This is the first time in seven years people have seen me for who I am, not what I look like or come from.

Thanks to samaritans for checking up on and feeding me… Don’t know how I would have ate or kept warm many nights without you.

Sometimes, you can feel really invisible and it can kind of feel al lot of times like there's no help out there. It was just nice to have people be like "Yea, we really want to help."
